Viagogo Explained: How the Ticket Marketplace Actually Works

Sold-out shows create a strange kind of market pressure: demand doesn’t disappear just because the box office ran out of seats, it just moves somewhere else. Viagogo has built its entire business around that gap. Headquartered in Geneva and operating in more than seventy countries, it’s one of the largest secondary ticket marketplaces in the world, a place where existing ticket holders resell to buyers still looking for a way in. Understanding exactly how that resale model works, and where its rough edges show up, matters more here than on most booking platforms, simply because the stakes of a bad transaction are higher: a missed concert, not a rebookable hotel night.

How the Marketplace Actually Works

Viagogo doesn’t sell tickets on behalf of venues or artists. It’s a resale platform, meaning every listing comes from an individual seller, often someone who bought tickets directly and can no longer attend, occasionally a professional reseller, setting their own asking price. That price can land above or below face value depending on demand, which is standard practice across every secondary ticket site, StubHub, Ticombo, and others work the same way. The distinction worth understanding upfront is the one between primary marketplaces like Ticketmaster or See Tickets, which sell directly from the event organiser at face value, and secondary marketplaces like Viagogo, where the price you see reflects what another buyer is willing to charge, not what the venue originally set.

The Buyer Guarantee, and Its Real Limits

Viagogo backs every purchase with a guarantee: if tickets don’t arrive, turn out to be invalid, or you’re denied entry because they’re counterfeit, the platform promises comparable replacement tickets or a full refund. That protection is genuine and has been honoured in a large share of cases. Where it gets more complicated is with nominative ticketing, an increasingly common policy, particularly at European football matches and major festivals, where a ticket is tied to the original buyer’s name or ID. If a venue checks names at the door and yours doesn’t match, entry can be refused regardless of whether the ticket itself was legitimately transferred, and several major European leagues and festival organisers have issued public warnings advising fans against buying resold tickets for exactly this reason. It’s worth checking an event’s specific transfer policy before buying secondhand, on any platform, not just this one.

Pricing Transparency Has Been a Genuine Sticking Point

Viagogo’s most consistent criticism, across review platforms and regulatory scrutiny alike, centres on fees. Service charges commonly add fifteen to twenty-eight percent on top of the listed price, and historically those fees weren’t always visible until checkout. Following pressure from regulators including the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, Viagogo now displays fee-inclusive pricing in many markets, though search results sorted by “cheapest” can still surface a base price before all charges are added. The practical takeaway is straightforward: always check the full checkout total, including fees, before comparing a Viagogo listing against the box office price or a competing resale platform.

What Reviews Actually Show

Independent review aggregators put Viagogo’s overall rating in solidly average territory, generally in the high threes out of five, reflecting a genuinely mixed track record: plenty of straightforward, successful transactions alongside a real volume of complaints about delayed ticket delivery, difficulty reaching support during time-sensitive issues, and confusion around refund eligibility. That pattern is common across the secondary ticketing industry broadly rather than unique to any single platform, but it’s still worth factoring in before a purchase where the stakes are a specific date you can’t move.

The Bottom Line

Viagogo is a legitimate, large-scale marketplace, not a scam, and its buyer guarantee does provide real recourse when something goes wrong. But it’s not automatically the cheapest or most transparent option for every event, and the resale model itself carries risks, price markups, nominative ticket restrictions, fee structures, that don’t exist when buying directly from an official box office. The sensible approach is the same one that applies to any resale platform: confirm the event’s entry and transfer policy first, compare the full fee-inclusive price against alternatives, and treat the guarantee as a safety net, not a reason to skip due diligence altogether.
